The Town of Summerville will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the renovation of Hutchinson Square on Friday, March 1, 2019. The ribbon-cutting will start at 6 p.m. with live music and food vendors to follow until 9 p.m. The event is free to the public.

Little Main St. between W. Doty Ave. and W. Richardson Ave. will be closed to vehicles during the event from 3 – 9 p.m. Businesses will remain open

The redesign features a raised pavilion and an entrance sign over the corner of the park at Main St. and Doty Ave. The pavilion and sign were inspired by the historic train depot that existed near Hutchinson Square in the early 1900s and the archway that once spanned Main St. near Hwy. 78. The renovations include new oak trees, new landscaping, sidewalks, and a fountain. Lighting has been updated and Little Main St. was resurfaced.

“We remodeled for the future but kept elements of our history and charm as well,” Doyle Best, Summerville’s Parks & Recreation Director, said. “I appreciate the community’s patience and support during the renovation."

“I believe a successful renovation should provide long-term benefits to the community,” Colin Martin, Summerville Town Administrator, said. “This project is an important step forward in providing a vibrant future for the town of Summerville.”

Summerville Town Council approved the Hutchinson Square Revitalization Project in 2015. The project’s master plan won the Engineering Excellence Award in 2016, an annual competition that recognizes engineering achievement.

Four Green Fields, Ed Carter Appraisal Services of South Carolina, and the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce are presenting sponsors of the event.
