The State of South Carolina, through the SC Arts Commission, invites towns and cities to consider applying for official designation as a South Carolina Cultural District. A group of Summerville arts and community leaders are exploring this opportunity for Summerville and are looking for your input.
Cultural District designation is awarded to towns and cities that can show a high level of arts and cultural resources and activities in a concentrated area. The Summerville Cultural District Steering Committee believes Summerville is right for this prestigious designation given the number of arts and culture organizations and businesses, public artworks, and cultural opportunities clustered in our historic downtown area.
Cultural District status is currently being utilized by a dozen cities across the state to attract artists and creative businesses, spur tourism, spark economic growth, and enhance quality of life. Places like Beaufort, Georgetown, Bluffton, and Aiken have received this designation and are seeing the benefits this status can bring.
The Steering Committee invites you to learn more and add your thoughts to what Cultural District designation could bring to Summerville.
